Steve Sandberg serves as Assistant to the President and General Counsel at Brigham Young University (BYU), a position to which he was appointed on December 1, 2018 [1]. In this role he directs the university's legal, compliance, and risk management and safety functions, overseeing the Department of Risk Management and Safety, the Integrity and Compliance Office, and the Office of General Counsel [1][2]. He also serves as general counsel for three other institutions sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—BYU–Hawaii, BYU–Idaho, and Ensign College [1][2].

Sandberg's practice focuses on higher-education law across the full institutional portfolio. After joining BYU as an attorney in the Office of General Counsel in 2006, he worked on matters as varied as negotiating the ESPN contract when BYU went independent in football and joined the West Coast Conference in other sports, working with Congress on federal legislation that allowed BYU to acquire the "Y" on Y Mountain from the U.S. Forest Service, representing BYU in litigation including two cases he argued before the Utah Supreme Court, and negotiating the Utah Transit Authority contract that provides free mass transit to BYU students and personnel [1].

Before joining BYU, Sandberg clerked for Judge Andrew J. Kleinfeld on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Fairbanks, Alaska, and worked as an associate at Morrison & Foerster LLP in Irvine, California [1][2]. He is licensed to practice in California, Hawaii, Idaho, and Utah [1].

Sandberg received his B.A. in English, summa cum laude, from BYU and his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was a Hamilton Fellow, a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, and a senior editor of the Columbia Law Review [1].

Sandberg currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA), the principal professional association for attorneys who represent colleges and universities [2].
