Art Lee

Art M. Lee is the Chief Campus Counsel at Stony Brook University, a position to which he was appointed effective January 15, 2026 ^[1]. As a member of the State University of New York (SUNY) Office of General Counsel, he reports to the University President and to SUNY's senior vice chancellor for legal affairs and general counsel, and he supervises the SUNY Stony Brook University Office of General Counsel regional office. That office provides legal services to the campus as well as to Stony Brook Medicine and its health sciences schools and hospitals and the Long Island State Veterans Home ^[1].

Lee's practice centers on higher-education law, encompassing the full range of legal and administrative matters facing a major public research university and its academic medical center. Over a career spanning nearly three decades in higher education, he has worked across transactional, student, employment, international, health sciences, expressive activity, and information security and privacy matters ^[1].

Before joining Stony Brook, Lee spent more than a decade in the University of Arizona Office of the General Counsel, serving as deputy general counsel and, beginning in 2021, as vice president and deputy general counsel, where he advised university leadership and provided counsel to the University of Arizona Health Sciences. Earlier in his career he held general counsel positions at Arizona State University and the University of Colorado, and he began in private practice with an insurance and employment defense law firm in Denver, Colorado ^[1].

Lee received his A.B. in Politics, Economics, Rhetoric and Law from the University of Chicago in 1990 and his J.D. from the University of Colorado School of Law in 1993 ^[1]. He has been active in the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) and has served as a past president and board member of both the Arizona Asian American Bar Association and the Colorado Asian Pacific American Bar Association.

Lee currently serves on the Board of Directors of NACUA, the principal professional association for attorneys who represent colleges and universities ^[2].
